Norman Rockwell at the Naples Museum of Art

On the wall in the reception entrance to the Naples Museum of Art is the inscription "Art Reflects the Soul of the Community."  This certainly describes Naples and the generosity of its residents whose benevolence brings such rich culture to the area.

As I entered the museum today, the courtyard was filled with young voices of high school students enjoying a field trip.  I was told by one of the attendants that student groups generally visit every day.  The Naples Museum of Art is a priceless resource for people of all ages in Collier County.

I had looked forward to seeing this Norman Rockwell exhibit, a collection of 15 original Rockwell oils and numerous other works, as well as each of his 321 Saturday Evening Post covers.  What a treat!  His works truly reflect the essence of American life from 1916 until 1963.  Through his character studies and intricate thematic details, he depicted a history of American lifestyle over five decades.  Norman Rockwell portrayed a sense of optimism through color, whimsical humor, and children.  I found his Shuffleton's Barbershop a masterpiece of chiaroscuro - the use of light and dark shadows.

The Norman Rockwell exhibit will be on display through May 15.
